How to Find an Honest Locksmith

OUTSIDE PHOENIX? START HERE.

Choose the locksmith before the work starts.

Get a clear business name, a written scope and an estimate you understand. A low advertised price is not a complete quote.

Five questions to ask on the phone

  1. What is the business name, and who will actually arrive?
  2. Do you service my exact lock or vehicle? Describe the problem and model.
  3. What are the visit fee, estimated labor, parts and possible extra charges?
  4. What would change the estimate, and will you ask me before doing extra work?
  5. What identification or proof of authorization should I have ready?

Before work starts

Confirm the arriving technician matches the business you called. Ask for applicable credentials and check them with the issuing agency where required. Requirements vary by location; a logo alone is not verification.

Ask for the proposed work and price in writing. If drilling or replacement is suggested, ask why it is necessary and whether a less destructive option fits your hardware. Keep the itemized receipt.

If the story changes

Pause before agreeing to a different price or unexpected work. Contact the business for clarification. If you feel threatened or someone is in immediate danger, seek emergency help.

For vehicle lockouts, check whether your roadside-assistance coverage can help. Recommendations from someone you trust can also narrow your search.
