Most smart lock problems come from three things: weak batteries, a deadbolt that binds against the door frame, or a setting or connection issue. Check them in that order. Replace the batteries with fresh ones, test the bolt with the door open, then check the app.

1. Check the power first

  • Replace all the batteries at once with fresh ones of the type your manual lists.
  • Check the battery contacts for corrosion or a loose battery.
  • Weak batteries can fool you. The keypad may light up but the motor may not have enough power to move the bolt.

If the lock is completely dead and you’re outside, see smart lock dead battery.

2. Check the door

A smart deadbolt’s motor is not strong enough to force a bolt that rubs the strike plate.

  1. Open the door and lock it with the app or keypad. If the bolt moves smoothly with the door open but stalls with it closed, it’s a line-up problem.
  2. Fix the line-up as shown in door won’t latch. Hinges, strike position and hole depth all matter.
  3. Make sure the bolt throws fully. A shallow strike hole can make a smart lock report an error.

If it won’t lock at all, see smart lock won’t lock.

3. Check the code and app

  • Code not working: re-enter it slowly. Check that the code hasn’t been deleted or limited by a schedule in the app.
  • Lockout: many locks pause after several wrong codes. Wait and try again.
  • App says offline: the lock may still work by keypad or key. Fix the connection separately. See smart lock not connecting.
  • Firmware updates: check the app for any updates to the lock.

Reset as a last step

Most smart locks have a reset procedure, but it can erase codes and settings. Use it only after the steps above, and follow your model’s manual.

Mechanical problems

Inside every smart deadbolt is a regular bolt and often a key cylinder. If the key is hard to turn too, read deadbolt hard to turn. Bill’s video above shows a complete electronic deadbolt installation, which helps you understand how the parts fit together.
