Sliding Door Lock Stuck or Door Won’t Open? What to Check

Home » Sliding Door Lock Stuck or Door Won’t Open? What to Check

When a sliding glass (Arcadia) door won’t open, first check the simple stuff: a bar in the track, a pin or foot lock still engaged, or a latch pressed against its keeper. Push the door firmly closed while you flip the lever. If the lever moves but the door still won’t release, the latch hook may be broken inside.

A stuck sliding door is frustrating, but slow and gentle usually wins. Most of the time the fix is simple once you know what’s holding it.

Quick checks

  1. Look for extra locks. A dowel in the track, a security bar, a foot lock or a pin lock can hold the door even when the latch is open.
  2. Take the pressure off. Push the door firmly toward the frame while you move the lever to unlock. Pressure on the hook can stop it from swinging back.
  3. Move the lever all the way. Some levers need a full throw to retract the hook.
  4. Try the key side. If your door has an outside key, try unlocking from the other side.

Latch hook stuck

If the lever moves freely but nothing happens, the link between the lever and the latch may be broken. If the lever won’t move at all, the latch may be jammed or corroded.

  • A small amount of dry lubricant on the hook (if you can reach it) may help.
  • Don’t pry the door away from the frame. You can bend the frame or crack the glass.
  • If the door is locked shut with a broken latch, this is usually a job for a sliding door repair specialist.

Door won’t slide

If the lock is open but the door won’t move:

  • Clean the track. Dirt and debris can stop the rollers.
  • Check the rollers. Worn or broken rollers let the door drag on the track. Adjusting the roller screws can lift it.
  • Look for bent track. A dent can block the door.

After it’s open

Find out why it stuck so it doesn’t happen again. If the hook was rubbing the keeper, adjust the rollers or the keeper as shown in sliding glass door won’t lock. If the latch is worn out, see sliding door lock replacement. Bill’s video above walks through how to diagnose a door that won’t open.

Common mistakes

  • Prying between the door and frame with a screwdriver
  • Spraying heavy oil into the latch, which collects grit
  • Forgetting a dowel or bar left in the track
  • Forcing the lever, which can snap the link inside the handle
